Our Year 6 children who are currently sitting exams need their sleep more than ever.
At 10 to 11 years old, the brain requires 9 to 11 hours of sleep nightly to process and store the facts learned during day-time study.
The 60-Minute Tech Blackout: It’s a good idea to make sure children are not using any tablets, phones, and computers at least one hour before bed. Blue light actively suppresses melatonin, tricks the brain into thinking it is daytime, and fuels racing exam thoughts.
Consistency Wins: Although this is easier said than done with busy family commitments it is important to try to keep wake-up and bedtimes as similar as possible on weekends and weekdays. Consistency stabilises their internal clock, helping them fall asleep faster.
Reading a physical book before bed is one of the most effective ways to lower stress and signal the brain to sleep. Let your children select an old favourite fiction book ( even if it is “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”) to help them to feel cosy and relaxed.
The "Brain Dump" Journal: Keep a notebook on the bedside table. If your child starts worrying about a fraction or vocabulary word while trying to sleep, have them write it down to "empty their head" until morning.
